Three Wise Men

17 -12 2014

By Peg Prendeville

It was with shock and sadness that we heard of the death last week, after a short illness, of Thomas J. O’Donoghue, poet and editor of the Ballyguiltenane Rural Journal since 1977.  One may forget that he was a very fine poet as well as editor. I understand that he had this year’s journal almost ready for printing when he got ill. One of the most treasured items in Glin library, where local history is concerned, is the collection of Journals since 1977. There is such an amount of local history contained in them that it would be hard to replace so in that alone he has left a huge legacy. He and Pat Brosnan and Paddy Faley RIP did not know in 1977 how much they were contributing to local history when they produced their first edition 37 years ago. I wrote the following article four years ago in 2010 but feel that it is fitting to repeat it here. I visited Pat Brosnan in St Ita’s during the week and he also spoke of his sadness at the passing of Tom. The following is the article.

Two important events took place in 1977. My wedding and the birth of the Ballyguiltenane Rural Journal. Thankfully both are still thriving! Yes, it is 33 years since Thomas J O’Donoghue, Pat Brosnan and Paddy Faley got together and conceived the idea of putting together a journal. The idea was a novel one at the time as there were none before them but even more so when one considers that these three men did not live in the one town or even the same townland. Tom is from Drumreask, Glin, Pat from Knocknagorna, Athea and Paddy from Glenbawn, Ballyhahill. What they had in common was a love of reading, a yearning for writing and enthusiasm.

The 1st edition of twelve pages cost 10p and had a drawing by Mr. Sheahan of Ballyguiltenane School on the front and back cover. There were submissions from the three founding members and also from Jimmy Dalton, Scairt, Annie & Michael Kinnane, Glenagragra, James McNamara, Ballygoughlin and Michael Fennell, Glenagragra. Such was the impact of that 1st edition that the next year, 1978, saw an increase to forty two pages, costing 50p including photographs. The founders were helped by Mary Brosnan, Knocknagorna, Mick Lynch, Blaine Bridge and Chicago, Mary Lynch Keogh, Killoughteen, John Joe O’Connor, Athea, J. Dalton, Scairt, Michael Fennell, Annie & Catherine Kinnane from Glenagragra, Liam O’Shaughnessy, Maighread McGrath, Athea, Henry Lyons, Jim Scanlon, James Feury and Paddy Barrett.  Since then it has grown to 138 pages in the 2009 edition with poems and articles and photos from over thirty contributors. Fitzsimons Printers continue to print it annually. It is noticeable by its green cover ever year.

It is only since I started working in the local library that I realise the enormous contribution to society these local journals give. There is an amount of local history contained within their pages and they are often a great resource to the children doing projects for school. So much folklore and history would be lost and forgotten but for these and I am not just thinking of the BRJ. I also include Athea, Loughill/Ballyhahill, Castlemahon etc. The photos, too, are a great reminder of people who have passed on and of events, and indeed fashions, of older days which would otherwise have been forgotten about.

So great credit is due to these three wise men, Tom, Pat and Paddy, who had the vision and the courage to start such a publication back in 1977. Thankfully they are all well and healthy though advancing in years. Paddy is 91 years and has contributed to all the journals through the years as has Pat and Tom. A special thanks to Tom who has edited all the journals and who continues to produce it year after year. He is constantly amazed at the amount of stuff he gets each year and appreciates all the contributions from near and far.”

First Generation, the earliest we can trace

Second Generation, all born in Ireland, some emigrated

Third Generation, hardships in Ireland, many emigrated to U.S., some

to Australia and Great Britain

Fourth Generation, many are in the U.S., most by birth, some by

emigration

Fifth Generation, most were born in the U.S.; some

emigrated from Ireland to UK, Australia

Sixth Generation, all acclimated in

countries of birth—most are in U.S.

Generation, only current info we have is from U.S. families

On July 5, 2008, I contacted Fr. Pat Moore, parish priest for St. Bridget’s

church in Duagh, Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland, and indicated that

Geoffrey and Bridget (O’Connor) O’Donoghue had at least one child who was

born/christened in Duagh, Geoffrey O’Donoghue, July 15, 1832. Fr. Moore

examined the records at St. Bridget’s, and the next day I learned these

results:

The marriage records for Geoffrey and Bridget (O’Connor) were not on file at

the church, and no records exist prior to 1816. But the church did hold

records of children that were born to the couple:

Geoffrey and Bridget (O’Connor) O’Donoghue:

Honora O’Donoghue, born/christened March 31, 1822

Patrick O’Donoghue, born/christened March 14, 1824

Charles O’Donoghue, born/christened April 11, 1825

Michael O’Donoghue, born/christened October 4, 1827 [See attached

sheets for family generations]

Joanna O’Donoghue, born/christened December 9, 1830

Jeffrey O’Donoghue, born/christened July 15, 1832 [See attached sheets

for family generations]

Bridget O’Donoghue, born/christened September 28, 1834

If you regard Geoffrey and Bridget O’Donoghue (no records for their birth,

death, or date of marriage) as the first generation we can clearly trace,

their children, listed above, are the second generation.

We have much information on the Michael O’Donoghue branch, thanks primarily

to the efforts of John Crawford. We also have accurate and organized

information on Jeffrey O’Donoghue, thanks to the genealogical efforts of

Nadine Donohue, married to descendant Jeffery Donohue, and their nieces.

The other four branches, however, are a mystery. We do know other O’Donoghues

lived on the south side of Chicago. Likely they were relatives, but the

exact relationship is unclear at this time.

—Sharon Donohue [wife of Kevin Donohue, fifth generation]

Hi Maureen

I have attached marriage and baptismal information for your grandmother, Julia Broderick. Her father, Daniel Broderick, was my great-grandmother's brother. My great-grandmother was Ellen Broderick. Daniel's parents were John Broderick and Julia Connell. I live in the U.S. and I researched the church records in Duagh, County Kerry a few years ago. My Kerry cousins had started the family tree. I put the info on ancestry.com and can give you a link to my tree if you would like.

My great-grandmother's father was also John Broderick but the church records show Ellen Shanahan as her mother. John had a number of children and my great-grandmother was raised by John and Julia. I don't know what happened to Ellen Shanahan (my actual great-great grandmother).

It's so nice to meet you! I hope the info is helpful. My sources were: churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords and the 1901/1911 Ireland census.

Regards,

Maureen

Hi Maureen an Jer

Many thanks for email and info todate.

Jer, the photos of Abbeyfeale graveyard are interesting but unfortunately I don't recognize

anybody in it.even though I recognize some of the surrounding area.

I am trying to put together a family tree( slowly and with difficulty).

At the moment I am trying to concentrate on my mothers side -----Mary B Moloney born in

Ballymacjordan, also known I think as Moynsha , Abbeyfeale or even Duagh. She had 1 sister ( Sheila I think),known to us as Sr Consuela of the presentation convent and spent most of her life in Lixnaw and around Kerry. She spent about 10 years in New Zealand.

My Mother died in 1998 .

My mothers mother was Julia Broderick who married a John Moloney. I think he always lived in Ballymacjordan or maybe he moverd there after getting married ??? John Moloney I think died late 40's or early 50's. Julia died in 1961 and both are buried in old graveyard in Abbeyfeale ??

Do you know who either of their parents were ??( John Moloney and Julia Broderick)

The Brodericks may have been known as Broders also ???but I don't know.

I have a name of a Daniel Broderick and Julia Harnett( or Hartnett) as parents of Julia but I don't know if that is right !!! Any dates of birth, marriage death or where they lived might help if you don't know.

If I got back to the early 1800's I would be happy as I think that is as much as my children or grandchildren would be interested in.

Many thanks to you both for your cooperation and help.

Jerry Kennelly wrote to me and said your grandmother was a Broder from Lisroe. Your grandmother may have been a relation to my grandmother. My grandmother was Nora O'Donoghue nee Broderick. Her father was Timothy and mother Ellen Broderick. Timothy's parents were Daniel and Johanna Broderick. Ellen was a cousin of Timothy's. Her father was John Broderick. John Broderick had other children and one married a Moloney and lived in Ballymacjordan.

Have you put together a family tree?

I have been working on mine on ancestry.com.

Thanks,

Maureen

Colin O’Donoghue, Pittsburgh, Pa, USA

Silver Medal Irish National Lacrosse Team

European Championships 2012, Amsterdam Netherlands

Native of Listowel.

Recently back from the 2012 European Lacrosse Championships in Amsterdam, hosted by the Netherlands, 21 year old Colin O’Donoghue was proudly wearing his silver medal won through his efforts with the Irish National Lacrosse Team. Colin carrying dual citizenship had qualified for the team during a 3 day tryout at University of Dublin in October 2011. Over 80 athletes participated for the 25 man roster and for the first time in Irelands young national lacrosse program they put together a formidable team that would rank them a spot in the top division of the best 6 teams in Europe. The standard of European lacrosse has never been more competitive and although the expectations for the team were a 5th or 6th place among the 18 participating countries, their goal was to hopefully capture a 3rd or 4th. But these young men had a different goal in mind, they walked, talked, and played for to get to the championship game and capture gold. The Irish team had the toughest schedule ahead of them, but really came together as a solid unit and actually gained momentum as the grueling 10 day tournament rolled along. After dropping the opening divisional game to England, Ireland lost in double overtime to a heavily favored German Team, as O’Donoghue’s game winner in the first overtime was ruled to have crossed the line at the buzzer. Things looked bleak for the Irish team after dropping the next game to their host, the Netherlands, but their Coach, NCAA Hall of Fame inductee, Richie Moran kept the spirit high, and with incredible support from the chanting Irish fans the team rallied to a win their next five games including an unexpected but convincing victory over the Germans in the quarterfinals of the championship tournament. Ireland had made it to the championship game leaving many of the more favored countries rallying behind them to keep the dream alive and beat the English. England has played lacrosse for over 40 years has never lost to a European Team, but as the clock ticked down they kept their record intact by wearing down the Irish. The Irish lads left everything on the field, but carried proud heats as they gathered in-front of their loyal supporters, packed in the grand stand, formed a line with arms over shoulders, roaring along to a chorus of “Ireland call”. To sum up the impact the Irish had on the event in whole a quote from the Netherlands tournament director; “Two lasting memories I will take away from this event is watching a higher caliber of lacrosse by European teams as witness by the rally of the Irish men, and the incredible Irish supporter with all of their chants and songs….just incredible to behold”.

As an additional point of interest Colin finished as one of Team Irelands top scorers, playing every minute of every game. Additionally he plays for the Pittsburgh Celtics Gaelic Football Club which last year made it to the GAA North American Board National Championships hosted in San Francisco taking away a gold medal as National Champs. Colin is currently a senior at Duquesne University majoring in Supply Chain Management, he is a founding partner at LakerDog Youth Lacrosse Camp, obtained a scholarship to Wingate University in N. C. prior to transferring, was a High School All American at Seneca Valley H. S. near Pittsburgh Pa. Colin's Irish roots are his; Grandfather Thomas O’Donoghue of Tannavalla, Listowel County Kerry; and his Grandmother Margaret (Lenihan) O’Donoghue’s parents, Balina County Mayo and Cork City County Cork.

Mat the Herder

From Rathea in the Schools Folklore collection

Mat Sheehy lived in the townland of Gurtaclohane in the begining of the nineteenth century. He was commonly known as Mat the Herder. He was a stout firm man and had great arms. Another great man lived long side him by the name of Sean O Leary. The two of um used to go to Cork once a fortnight with firkins of butter in a horse & car.

At the same time there was a great fighting man in Cork. One day the Buffer of Cork challenged any man to fight him. Mat came up to Leary and said that it wouldnt take such a great man to beat him. "You better keep your tongue in your pocket" said Leary dont he hear you. At that the Buffer heard him and challenged him to fight and handed him a black torn stick so they took at it.

The Buffer was giving him great strokes in the head but they were taking no effect out of him. In the finish Leary said to Mat in Irish "Tóg íseal é" to take him low. At that Mat struck him across the ribs and brought him to the ground and the Buffer said to Mat "You're a good man. I was never beaten before". The Cork people said they would give him his hat full of gold if he shouted as a Cork man but he said he would not saying "I am a Kerry man and I'll shout for no other County but Kerry".

Mat had fourteen heifers grazing in the mountain owned by Stephen Galvin at present. He had a big dog. His dog was called Bully and he used to be always minding the heifers for fear they would be stolen. One morning as the ground was covered with snow Bully came came barking to the door and made signals to Mat that the heifers were stolen.

So the two started out in search of them. They tracked um as far as Limerick and there they found um between two glens. They went about turning the heifers home when ten men attacked um to take the heifers of um so they started fighting and he beat the ten men but he would never do so without the dog. When five of um would come in front of him and five more behind him the dog would jump up and ketch um by the cape of the coat and bring um to the ground and in that way he beat the ten men and brought home his heifers to Gurtaclohane

Soon after a great man from  County Limerick heard about Mat so he said he would have a trial out of him. He picked two good sticks one for himself and another for Mat. He enquired from house to house until he came to Mat. As soon as Mat saw him he got in dread of him so he said he was not Mat the Herder at all but he'd carry him to Mat's house. But that if he'd like, himself would fight him but that Mat (M) should be present at the fight.

Mat was indread to attack him alone without Leary with him for Leary was a better man than himself. If he beat him himself Leary would have an other chance and if Leary beat him Mat would still hold his good name. When they landed at Leary's house Mat had a private talk with him and Leary said to him not to be in dread. Then they started fighting and no one of um was getting the upper hand for a half anhour. It was getting very hot then and Mat was getting two much of it Then Leary told him in Irish not to draw at all but to keep up his guards and that he would get tired. Mat did so and stroke by stroke the other fellow was failling. Then all of a sudden Mat struck him across the ribs and brought him to the ground so Mat held his good name and gave up fighting at the age of fifty.
