General Eoin O Duffy Born 20 October 1892, Lough Egish, Monaghan, O'Duffy, he was the second Commissioner of the Garda Síochána.

In 1936 the General organised an Irish Brigade to fight for Franco in the Spanish Civil War. 700 of O'Duffy's followers went to Spain to fight on Franco's side. Franco refused a ship for the next 600 volunteers who had assembled in Galway in January 1937.

General O Duffy died on 30 November 1944, aged 52. He was afforded a state funeral by the government. Following requiem mass in the Pro-Cathedral he was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery

Friendly Fire 2-3-1937, Tom Hyde and Young Chute who was a good boy sent his money home for Masses, he was a native of Kerry. Young Connor of Tralee, Duffy was asked to send him home, he noted friendly relations between Dev and McDonald the British PM. MARTYRS:  522 Spanish Martyrs who were victims of the Spanish Civil War beatified on 13 October 2013 by Pope Francis. It was one of the largest number of persons ever beatified in a single ceremony in the Church's history. They originated from all parts of Spain. Their ages ranged from 15 to 78 years old.

In his 1961 book, Spanish Archbishop Antonio Montero Moreno, who at the time was director of the journal Ecclesia, wrote that 6,832 were killed during the war, including 4,184 priests, 2,365 monks and friars, and 283 nuns, in addition to 13 bishops, by the conflict's end, 20 percent of the nation's clergy had been killed,

40,000 foreign nationals fought with the Brigades, They claimed to represent 53 nations.

The Civil War involved large numbers of non-Spanish citizens . Germany sent a Luftwaffe unit and modern warplanes and 16,000 German citizens fought in the war, including approximately 300 killed. Italy sent 100,000 men. Britain and France led a group of 27 nations that promised an embargo on all arms to Spain. Germany, Italy and the Soviet Union also signed on officially, but ignored the embargo. A volunteer force of up to 20,000 came from Portugal about 4,000 from Britain and France 10,000 volunteed and many other countries also sent smaller numbers of men. SPANISH CIVIL WAR , Limerickmen who fought on republican side. Frank Ryan; Jim Woulfe from Athea; Gerrard Doyle, William Street; Patrick Brady, Thomondgate; Joseph Ryan, Mungret Street and Maurice Emmett Ryan from Upper Catherine Street. Jim Woulfe was killed in the Battle of Belchite in 1937, while Emmet Ryan was executed by his own side during the battle of the Ebro, none of them were living in Limerick when they went to fight in Spain. In December 1936,  former IRA man Frank Ryan and eighty volunteers arrived in Spain. The majority came from the Irish Free State, they wanted to support the Spanish Republican government and were also annoyed by General O Duffy and his men supporting Franco.

It is claimed that 275 Irish volunteers served in the British Battalion, the Lincolns and the Canadian unit, the Mackenzie-Papineau (MacPaps). The International Brigade volunteers saw a fatality rate of nearly 27%, with 74 dead.
